ENZO, IL MINUSCOLO RIGHELLO DELL’INDUSTRIA by Enzo Carella

The tiny ruler of the record industry is the second title of my work, again a reference to Enzo and his music. I got to know Carella through an Italian film. The song Malamore really caught my attention and from there I started researching the singer's work. So I asked Italian friends and descendants in Brasil what they thought of the artist and no one had ever heard of him. Some of them were amazed by the quality of his music and it became a mystery to me why such a good artist could be so unknown. In Brazil, musician Tom Zé experienced something similar: he was ostracised for years until the singer of the group Talking Heads declared his love for his work. So my compatriots started to take his music seriously again as if David Byrne was some kind of super-powerful guru who, by esteeming the Bahian singer, could give the key that some people needed to consider his work valuable. I was at a concert of Tom's in 1997 in São Paulo and there were no more than 20 people in the audience. Fortunately, the brilliant Brazilian artist has been revalued, regaining his rightful status. Unlike Enzo, who passed away in 2017. I understand that the singer-songwriter was underestimated by the record industry, which with its tiny ruler cannot or did not want to understand Carella's great value.
